The Calcutta High Court strongly pulled up the Election Commission of India (ECI) during a hearing on the Bengal by-poll symbol controversy, remarking that the poll body's arbitrary decisions repeatedly burden the judiciary with avoidable litigation. The dispute stems from the upcoming by-elections in Nandigram and Rejinagar, where following a rift in the Trinamool Congress, the ECI froze the original party symbol and allotted the 'Envelope' symbol to the Ritabrata Banerjee-Arup Roy faction (Democratic Trinamool Congress). The Indian Secular Front (ISF), led by Naushad Siddiqui, moved the High Court challenging the decision, pointing out that ISF had successfully contested earlier elections on the 'Envelope' symbol, and changing it to 'Almirah' just months later would confuse voters. Questioning why the ECI picked the exact same symbol out of 183 available options instead of reserving it, Justice Krishna Rao called for absolute impartiality from election officials.
