According to Charvaka, the pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of pain are the primary goals of human life. However, they recommend moderation to avoid the negative consequences of overindulgence. Despite its popularity in ancient times, Charvaka philosophy largely declined by the medieval period, mainly due to lack of institutional support and criticism from other philosophical schools. However, its legacy endures as a unique voice of rationalism and materialism in Indian philosophy, reminding us of the value of questioning established beliefs and pursuing knowledge through experience and reason.
