What Happened on the Night of July 20? | NL Interview With Abhijeet Dipke
On the night of July 20, after Delhi Police cracked down on protesters attempting to march to Parliament, Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), found himself nearly alone standing next to Kerala House. In conversation with Newslaundry’s Manisha Pande, Dipke described the crackdown’s immediate aftermath. Journalists had left, the electricity was cut, and it seemed like it was all over. Even a watchman at the Kerala House asked him to move along. Contemplating whether to abandon the Jantar Mantar protest site altogether, Dipke instead resolved to stay, telling a team member urging him to go home: “If I’m to be removed from here, the police will have to drag me out. I’m not leaving Jantar Mantar.” Around 25 supporters gathered around him in a circle, uncertain what would come next. Dipke recalled sensing their unspoken anxiety: “I could see the questions in their eyes... whether I had failed or what the outcome would be.” When the group tried to lighten his mood, he rebuffed them, asking if they understood the gravity of what happened that day. Then, from beyond the barricades, he began hearing faint slogans calling for (now former) Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation – signalling that the wider crowd, kept outside by police, had no intention of dispersing. Within minutes, the group of 25 swelled to a 100, overwhelming the stage and minimal police presence there that night. Dipke climbed onto the stage and directed volunteers to let people back in through the barricades. Jantar Mantar filled up again within fifteen minutes, slogans demanding Pradhan’s resignation rising once more.
