Two Contrasting Views On The Trump-Zelensky Spat

Two contrasting views on the Trump-Zelensky spat: Financial Times Columnist, Martin Wolf, and former Foreign Secretary, Krishnan Srinivasan, speak to Karan Thapar for The Wire. ........................................ The most incredible if not unbelievable spat has broken out between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump has called him a dictator who has done a terrible job and claims Zelensky only has 4% support. Trump dismisses him as a “modestly successful comedian”, accuses him of starting the Russia-Ukraine war and claims Zelensky isn’t important enough to be involved in peace talks. Trump adds Zelensky “better move fast or he is not going to have a country left”. In response, Zelensky has accused Trump of living in a “disinformation bubble” and disputed Trump’s $500 billion bill for aid to Ukraine. He said this is not serious. Now, today we present two contrasting and very different views responding to this spat. Martin Wolf, the internationally acclaimed Financial Times columnist, believes Trump likes dictators and wants to be one himself and particularly admires Putin. Mr. Wolf said Trump is clearly on Russia’s side and does not see Ukraine as an ally. In contrast, Krishnan Srinivasan, India’s former Foreign Secretary and former Deputy Secretary General of the Commonwealth, believes the spat should not be taken seriously because it’s laughable and it’s like two school boys quarrelling in a school yard. More importantly, Mr. Srinivasan believes that there is a certain element of logic and truth in Trump’s statements even though they are off-the-cuff and impetuous. He also believes Zelensky was wrong to reply to Trump, because Trump is thick-skinned and takes offence easily. By replying Zelensky may not have done himself or his country any service. I will stop there. These are two very different views and, therefore, two very different ways of responding to the spat and, more importantly, the issues that underlie it i.e. Trump’s attitude to Ukraine and the talks that are underway with Moscow as well as – as far as Mr. Srinivasan is concerned – the history of the last 30 years that lies behind Trump’s statements. Finally, both men address the question could a new form of politics be emerging i.e. could other leaders start to adopt Trump’s manner and behaviour? Here is the link to the two interviews. After the teasers and the titles, the first interview is that of Martin Wolf. The second, after the break, is that of Krishnan Srinivasan.
