Trump’s Gaza Plan is “Imperialism & Ethnic Cleansing”; He's “The Most Dangerous Person in the World”
Trump's Gaza plan is "imperialism & ethnic cleansing"; he's "the most dangerous person in the world": Gershon Baskin, Middle East Director, International Communities Organization, to Karan Thapar for The Wire. .......................................... One of Israel’s foremost analysts, who was also the negotiator who secured the release of Gilad Shalit in 2011, has said that President Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza is “imperialism and ethnic cleansing”. Gershon Baskin called it “insane” and a sign of “a world gone upside down”. He added: “Donald Trump is the most dangerous person in the world.” In a 20-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Dr. Baskin, who is the Middle East Director of the International Communities Organization, said Donald Trump is “unpredictable, unreliable, unprincipled” adding “we have no idea where he is leading”. In the interview, Dr. Baskin analyses in some detail and depth the future of the two-state solution idea, the response of the Israeli far-right to Trump’s statements, the response of Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, as well as what Trump has additionally said about the possibility that America could accept Israel’s annexation of the West Bank, the future of the Abraham Accords as well as the future of the Ceasefire Agreement with Hamas (will it continue or collapse? will there be a phase 2?) and contradictions in Trump’s thinking with regard to Saudi Arabia. I will, however, leave you to see the interview for yourself to find out what Dr. Baskin says about all of this. He is richly analytical, forthright and outspoken and pretty riveting. However, to help you, I will give you a list of the questions asked. Here they are:- 1) Standing beside Prime Minister Netanyahu, President Trump has said he wants to “take over and own” Gaza, clear the land of all Gazan people and then develop it. And he seemed to suggest the majority of the Gazan people would not be allowed to return. How do you respond to that? 2) This is the most radical statement we have ever heard from a US government. Where does it leave to the two-state solution which has been US policy up till now? Do you get the feeling President Trump has turned his back on that? 3) Trump is very close to Israel and Netanyahu, in particular. What he’s said echoes Ben-Gvir’s views about Gazan migration and it’s been welcomed by Smotrich. Doesn’t this look like a huge victory for the far right in Israel? 4) Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia have categorically announced they are not prepared to accept the Gazan people. Are you worried that Trump could arm-twist them into changing their positions? 5) On the one hand, Trump is talking about owning and taking over Gaza and clearing the Gazan people out. On the other hand, we know his dream is an Israel-Saudi Arabia Accord and the Saudis have made it very clear that is not possible without the “establishment of a Palestinian state”. The Saudis have said this is their “firm and unwavering” position. So is Trump caught in his own contradictions? Or has a U-turn happened in his thinking? 6) At the same press conference President Trump also seemed to suggest that in four weeks America could possibly accept Israel’s annexation of the West Bank. How do you respond to that? 7) Finally, where does this confusion leave the ceasefire negotiated by Egypt, Qatar and the United States? Will it continue or collapse? Will there be a phase 2? 8) Trump has four more years ahead of him as President of the United States. If this is how it’s started how worried are you about the remaining four years?
