Mr. Sarna said: “I don’t think Trump has pulled of anything, as I see it. I think he’s backed off. He’s backed off not only from his hugely exaggerated and bombastic comments of yesterday but he’s actually backed off from this entire conflict that was a war of aggression, a war of choice, launched by the US and Israel.” Referring to Donald Trump’s claim (to AFP) that this is a “total and complete victory”, Mr. Sarna said: “Whatever he does today he is saying it’s a victory because he’s changed his goalpost. He’s now claiming regime change was not an objective. I think the uranium 440 kilograms, which is 60% enriched, (he says) there is no point getting it because its buried deep under. And we already have a new regime and everything is going to be hunky-dory. So he declares victory because he doesn’t know what a defeat is.” In fact, Mr. Sarna said this outcome is, in effect, a military defeat for America. “I think it’s a military defeat for the United States in the sense that they realize today that you cannot do everything by military or technological superiority.” Mr. Sarna was skeptical of how much can be achieved in the negotiations starting in Islamabad on Friday. His conclusion was: “Two weeks may not be enough and in two weeks we may have the conflict raging again.” I will stop there.
