In an interview to discuss the Prime Minister’s new doctrine against terror, articulated in his address to the nation last night, Arun Shourie, a former Cabinet Minister and a former Editor of The Indian Express, said that whilst he agrees and endorses a large part of Mr. Modi’s new doctrine, he also warned the Prime Minister that to effectively fight terror Mr. Modi must first treat all Indians justly. Quoting from the Gospel by Matthew (12.25) from the New Testament, Mr. Shourie said: “Every Kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.” In a 30-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Mr. Shourie who is also the author of several renowned books, said that whilst he endorses Mr. Modi’s doctrine of responding decisively to any act of terror and not to distinguish between terrorists and governments who sponsor them, he has reservations about the third element of the doctrine that there will be no tolerance of terror that hides under the umbrella of a nuclear blackmail. Mr. Shourie also said he has reservations about what was said earlier that every act of terror will be a declaration of war. He fears that this could make India hostage to every terrorist and, specifically, it could encourage Pakistani terrorists, who are quarrelling with their own government, to take terrorist action in India in the hope that India will respond and remove their government. In this interview, Mr. Shourie also spoke extremely critically of the way the Godi media acquitted itself. He said: “It’s a disgrace to the media …. to the country … it was a crime against the country.” Mr. Shourie said that if he had wanted the Prime Minister could have silenced the Godi media by simply sending “a chaprasi” to do the job but he did not bother.
