The Night Cockroaches Refused to Sleep | NL’s Jantar Mantar Ground Report
Saturday night into Sunday morning was the longest yet for Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) protesters, with fears running high that Delhi Police would forcibly clear the site after their officers had already forcibly removed educationist Sonam Wangchuk from the location on Saturday morning. Newslaundry’s team stayed through the night to document what happened. Our reporters observed that the protesters’ core strategy was simple but effective: never let the crowd thin out, since dwindling numbers would give police an opening to disperse the site. Through the night, as some left and others arrived, the numbers held, dipping briefly around 4 am before swelling again by morning. Protesters resisted sleep by singing songs, playing guitar and fanning those asleep in the heat. A woman with a theatre background led group singing, while another female protester stationed herself at the very front of the stage guarding CJP founder Abhijit Dipke, anticipating a repeat of Wangchuk’s forcible removal. Protesters believed that if women held that line, they could delay police from taking Dipke away, and prevent something similar from happening to him as with Wangchuk. Chandrashekhar Azad, a Member of Parliament, made a late-night appearance. Posters carrying memes, film dialogues and revolutionary verse dotted the ground, including lines from the film Gulaal and a couplet by Dushyant Kumar. One of our reporters also spoke to people with disabilities who had travelled from Kurukshetra on battery-run tricycles, covering 60 km at a stretch, saying their only demand was accountability for their children's future. By morning, a stir swept the crowd amid rumours of a crackdown before stage announcements clarified nothing had happened.
