The Surya Namaskar (1928) A Film by the Raja of Aundh This silent film of just under 11 minutes was made by the Raja of Aundh (Raja Bhavanrao Shrinivasrao Pant Pratinidhi), probably in 1928, in Aundh, a princely state of colonial India located in present-day Maharashtra. The film, entitled “Surya Namaskar” (Sun Salutation) in both English and Hindi, likely is the earliest existing film depicting the Surya Namaskar, a signature set of movements of modern yoga. The film features bilingual intertitles in Hindi and English interspersed with shots of the Surya Namaskar sequence performed by the Raja, the Rani (queen), their children and grandchildren, and Aundh’s schoolchildren. The Raja published books about this yogic sequence in many languages and screened this film during his travels throughout India and Europe to promote the Surya Namaskar’s benefits. During a trip to Europe in 1936, he likely left a copy of the film in London, which we found in the archives of the British Film Institute (BFI) during research for our book, The Yoga of Power (Columbia University Press 2025). We present the film here as it was archived, with no edits other than this title slide.
