In an interview to discuss the implications of the rift that seems to have emerged between Shashi Tharoor and the Congress Party, the well-known and highly regarded historian, author and political commentator Ramachandra Guha has said that he believes Shashi Tharoor should have been made the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha in 2019. However, Mr. Guha also says that if there is one criticism that can be made of Shashi Tharoor it’s his love of attention and adulation. In a 25-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Mr. Guha described Shashi as an “outstanding writer, scholar, thinker” adding he is “an asset to the Congress Party and an adornment to Indian politics”. In the interview, Mr. Guha raises the question – illustrated in a sense by what is happening to Shashi Tharoor – whether outstanding professionals like Shashi Tharoor, Nandan Nilekani, Arun Shourie can fit into Indian politics, regardless of the party they are associated with, and whether they are used by their parties effectively.
