Rahul Gandhi's a dilettante, lacks commitment and charisma, unlikely to ever be PM: Ramachandra Guha to Karan Thapar for The Wire. ......................................... In an interview to discuss how he views Rahul Gandhi as a leader of Congress and Leader of the Opposition, the well-known and highly regarded historian, author and political commentator, Ramachandra Guha, says Rahul Gandhi is a dilettante, who lacks commitment and certainly lacks charisma and is unlikely to ever make it to Prime Minister of India. Ramachandra Guha says: : “Rahul Gandhi may be a good fellow; nonetheless, those who wish for a successful pushback against the hate-filled regime of the BJP should perhaps stop looking to him as their principal source of hope.” Ramachandra Guha adds: “As a prospective prime ministerial challenger to Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi lacks discipline, gravitas and a curriculum vitae.” Speaking of the relationship between Rahul Gandhi and his mother, Sonia Gandhi, Ramachandra Guha says: “(Rahul Gandhi) remains an instrument of his mother’s will. One can have little doubt that he entered politics at Sonia Gandhi’s command and that he leads the Congress at her behest too.” In other words, by becoming a politician Rahul Gandhi has not responded to a natural inclination or calling and that is why he is so ill-suited to the job. Ramachandra Guha points out that Rahul Gandhi has failed to learn from his mistakes: “The chowkidar chor hai campaign spectacularly backfired in 2019, yet (Rahul Gandhi) continues to personally attack the Prime Minister - calling him cowardly, compromised and so on - instead of focusing on governance failures or indeed on renewing his own party at the grassroots.” Ramachandra Guha points out that Congress has steadily lost ground across the country. “The Bharatiya Janata Party is now the natural party of governance in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and several other states where the Congress was once dominant.” You could add to that list Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Bengal. Ramachandra Guha adds: “Rahul Gandhi has been incapable of arresting this slide.” Finally, Ramachandra Guha points out that not just Rahul Gandhi but his mother and the sycophants that surround them have become accomplices in helping Modi and Shah retain power. He says: “It is also now starkly evident that in their pursuit and consolidation of power Modi and Shah have had as their (witting or unwitting) accomplices Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and the sycophants who surround them.” If you want to understand why Rahul Gandhi has and is failing to be an effective leader of Congress or of the Opposition then this is an interview you must see.
