Political Will Responding Only to Money Man, it has to Respond to People: Ecologist Madhav Gadgil

On December 10, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announced its Champions of the Earth awards for 2024. One of the six people to win this global award is Indian ecologist Madhav Gadgil. In an interview with The Wire on the same day, Gadgil spoke about his most-widely shared and debated-about work, the 2011 Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel report, which identified almost 75% of the Ghats outside Protected Areas as of high sensitivity when it came to some construction activities. After states went up in arms about the recommendations, the union government formed another panel. The report by this panel, however, is “perverted”, “dictatorial” and “anti-people”, Gadgil told The Wire. And if states had implemented the report that his panel submitted in 2011, the impact of the recent Wayanad landslides - that killed more than 300 people - could have been substantially reduced. He commented on how parts of forest land on the Great Nicobar Island - which will be diverted for a slew of developmental projects - should remain inviolate, and about how scientists should not produce bogus data to make money out of Environmental Impact Assessments.
