One of Pakistan’s reputable Dawn newspaper’s most highly regarded columnists has said that Pakistan’s claim to have downed five Indian planes is its response to India’s strike. Zahid Hussain also pointed to Pakistan’s claim that it has successfully attacked what he called Brigade Headquarters in Jammu, which India’s PIB has refuted. Together these two alleged developments, Mr. Hussain said, constitute Pakistan’s response to India’s military strikes on nine targets. Mr. Hussain said this is what Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif were referring to when the former said there would be “a full and strong response” and when the latter said “we will give a far greater response than their strike”. Mr. Hussain also claimed, quoting Pakistan’s ISPR, that India had attacked a hydroelectric project on the Neelum River but added that although it was hit it has not been gravely damaged. Mr. Hussain claimed that there were only six not nine targets, as India has claimed, and he refuted Indian television reports that 70 terrorists have been killed. Instead, he maintained, that there have only been 26 deaths and they are, he said, civilians including two children.
