After the stampede at New Delhi railway station on Saturday night, police presence outside the station has increased. Despite the tragedy and the heavy police deployment, passengers can still travel to Prayagraj from the station. The railway administration has barricaded the station entrance and passengers are allowed entry in a single file. But the real question is – why did the administration wake up only after the February 15 incident? The stampede could have been avoided if the railway authorities had implemented these measures earlier. On the day of the incident, there was no significant police presence or security measures in place to tackle large crowds. The arrangements now are clearly too little, too late. The Wire spoke to eyewitnesses who confirmed that there was no barricading outside the railway station on the night of 15 February, that police deployment was negligible, and that the uncontrolled crowds triggered the stampede. We also visited the railway platforms and observed increased security measures compared to other days at the New Delhi railway station. Railway police personnel can now be seen stationed near every railway coach, guiding passengers and controlling the crowd. When we spoke to passengers, many acknowledged that security arrangements have improved, but the number of passengers heading to Prayagraj Kumbh Mela remains high. Some passengers expressed disappointment with railway management, citing delayed trains and administrative failures.
