He has authored as many as 36 books, including on information warfare and psychological operations. In a conversation with Abhinandan Sekhri, he talks about how the Army is represented in the media and popular culture, human rights violations, and collateral damage in war. When Abhinandan asks whether human rights should exist while discussing allegations of human rights violations by the Indian Army in Kashmir, Bakshi says, “There were about 2,576 human rights violation accusations in Jammu and Kashmir when I was there… You are under fire, you open fire, one or two civilians get killed.” In response, Abhinandan points out, “I could not miss the casualness with which you said 'one or two civilians get killed’.” Bakshi pushes back at this line of questioning, saying, “From the way that you are framing your questions, it seems to me that you are quite convinced that these army guys, they are going berserk there, and the first chance he gets, he'll shoot somebody.” It's a framing Abhinandan rejects, pressing Bakshi to acknowledge that an innocent person can be killed. “I have not been able to get you to acknowledge that there can be an innocent person who is killed. You haven't even acknowledged an innocent person who is killed.” Bakshi responds by saying, “It will be a greater tragedy if I stop my operation because that life was lost. My country is more important. That is what I am saying.” Subscribe to Newslaundry: https://rzp.io/rzp/nlsm Unpack story behind bulldozers in Kashi: https://rzp.io/rzp/nl6yv82bk Join the #FightToBreathe: https://rzp.io/rzp/T4Ob0FCb Download the accessible Newslaundry app: https://www.newslaundry.com/download-app Join us on WhatsApp: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029Va61PEo0QeacOqU9vr2k Follow and engage with us on social media: Facebook: https://facebook.com/newslaundry Twitter: https://twitter.com/newslaundry Instagram: https://instagram.com/newslaundry
