Israel Kills Yahya Sinwar: Who Was the Hamas Leader?
Yahya Sinwar, who is said to be the mastermind of the Oct 7 attack in Israel that led to the killing of 1200 Israeli is assassinated by the Israeli Defence Force. Sinwar, 61, took charge when Hamas's political leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Iran in August. Born in 1962 in Khan Yunis Refugee Camp., Sinwar joined Hamas in 1987 and spent decades in Israeli prisons. Sinwar has earned a Bachelor's degree in Arabic Language and Literature from the Islamic University of Gaza, and was among the pioneers of the Islamic Resistance in Palestine. Global commentators believe that this development may significantly impact the conflict's trajectory. Israeli forces' airstrikes on Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, killing at least four Palestinians and injuring dozens more, have thrown up harrowing images. According to Dr. Fahd al-Haddad, head of the emergency department at Al-Aqsa Hospital, many of the victims were children and women. Many have third-degree burns. The hospital has run out of space for medical care, with patients being treated on the floor. Om Ahmad Radi, a survivor of the attack, described the horrific scene: "We woke up to smoke, flames, fire, and burning pieces falling on the tents from every direction. The explosions terrified us..." The World Health Organization chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has condemned the attack, stating that WHO and partners finally managed to reach Kamal Adwan and Al-Sahaba hospitals after nine attempts, amid ongoing attacks. Palestine's health ministry has condemned the 'direct targeting' of Al-Aqsa Hospital, stating that the attack caused a large fire in the tents of the displaced and hospital facilities. Palestinian medics also reported that 10 people were killed and at least 30 wounded in Israeli air attacks on a food distribution centre in the besieged Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza. The international community has repeatedly called for urgent intervention to protect hospitals and health workers from the brutality and crimes of the Israeli occupation. The situation in Gaza remains dire with no purported end in sight for civilians’ suffering.
