Eleven years later, his message remains largely the same. In 2014, he urged the newly elected Prime Minister to “reassure the minorities”. In 2025, he calls on Modi to reflect on the concerns and perspectives of the Opposition. “The views and interests of those who don’t support the Prime Minister should be just as important to him as those of his supporters,” he says. Gandhi was in the Newslaundry studio to speak about his new book The Undying Light, which traverses India’s journey since 1947 through a deeply personal lens. Among the many figures who shaped him was his maternal grandfather, C Rajagopalachari. Gandhi calls him a “sparkling intellectual” and an “overwhelming relative” – though not without faults. “Raja ji said some appalling things,” he admits. “I didn’t have the guts to tell him at the time, but I know he would’ve taken it well. He was a reasonable man.” It was Rajagopalachari who nudged him towards the civil services, steering him away from a budding interest in journalism. “How can you write about life without knowing what life is about?” he had asked. Gandhi’s early postings – including in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu – brought him face-to-face with the struggles of farmers, Dalits, and minorities. Touching on the role of governors in India’s federal system, the former West Bengal Governor says: “If the influence of a governor is misused, it vanishes like mist. But if exercised rightly, it can be a great asset to the people.” Gandhi also imagines an alternate history – one in which Ambedkar remained Law Minister and went on to become India’s first Vice President.
