India's Toxic Waste: Asbestos Cement; How illegal disposal releases carcinogenic fibre; Experts talk
This video is about asbestos cement roofing which is a toxic waste as it is often seen disposed improperly. This is an issue not only because it is a construction and demolition waste, but also because it is a toxic material which 'can enter air, water, and soil from the weathering, weathering, renovation, or demolition of manufactured asbestos products' as was stated by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change in an affidavit to NGT in India. The National Green Tribunal in another case also stated that 'we consider it necessary to observe the exposure to Asbestos is risk factor for developing disabling & deadly lung diseases years after the exposure. Inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to scarring of the lung tissues, which can result in the loss of lung function, disability & death. Asbestos exposure can also cause cancer in the lungs & cancer (known as Mesothelioma) in the lining of the lungs or stomach. There is no safe level of asbestos exposure.' This video features two experts, Ar Shamita Chaudhary of Malba Project and Sean Fitzgerald, geologist and asbestos testing expert, USA. Sean states in a peer reviewed paper that 'it has been shown that as little as 0.001% of asbestos in loose clay soil can produce around 0.1 fiber/cc of asbestos in the air with a respirable dust concentration of around 5 mg/m3'. In a study titled 'Analysis of mesothelioma cases and National Cancer Registry data to assess asbestos exposure in India' it has bee shown that contrary to popular belief, mesothelioma which is supposed to be a 'rare malignancy' has been found in large numbers across India. It is pertinent to note that after a disaster, or after a demolition or slum eviction, lots of asbestos may be released when broken into small pieces, and this is a potential cause for asbestos related disease.
