In an interview where he discusses the core message of an article he’s written for today’s Calcutta paper, The Telegraph, the well-known and highly regarded historian, author and political commentator, Ramachandra Guha, says India is getting re-hyphenated with Pakistan because for the last decade it’s been regressing and steadily moving away from its founding principles. Mr. Guha believes it’s the responsibility of the Indian people to stand up and assert their commitment to the founding principles, the Constitution and the sensible conventions established over the last seven decades. In a 25-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Ramachandra Guha cites two main reasons why he believes India is becoming re-hyphenated with Pakistan. The first is the response and attitude of the American government to the present India-Pakistan crisis and, in particular, Donald Trump’s comments and tweets. Mr. Guha points out that there have been seven in the last seven days. The second is the way in which leading international papers, in particular, The Financial Times, have covered the India-Pakistan crisis. He cites details from the FT’s coverage which illustrate how the paper and its columnists have begun to regard India and Pakistan as equivalent entities.
