I See Military Action as Real Possibility; It Will Contradict Govt Behaviour if It Doesn’t Happen

I see military action as real possibility; it would contradict government's earlier behaviour if it didn't happen: Srinath Raghavan, Professor of History and International Relations at Ashoka University to Karan Thapar for The Wire .......................................... One of India’s most highly regarded strategic affairs analysts, Prof. Srinath Raghavan, has said: “I do see military action as a real possibility. In fact, I believe we should be expecting such action to happen. The steps that have been taken so far are preparatory and preliminary steps. There are various ways in which we can bring pressure to bear on Pakistan. Military action is one of them. We need to create a proper international consensus that India is entitled to act in self-defence in this matter. But the reason I say that I expect there would be military action is because the government both in 2016, when across the LoC special forces action was carried out billed as surgical strikes, and then subsequently in 2019, when we carried out air strikes on targets across the Line of Control, in both instances the government presented these actions as indicative of a new strategic posture. Indeed, of a new India. A lot of talking-up of these actions was done both by the government as well as affiliated organizations. Now the threshold is pretty much of expectations domestically that there will be some military action. I don’t see how the government can walk away in the face of such a serious attack and not carry out actions at least at that level of threshold.” In a 25-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Prof. Raghavan, who is Professor of History and International Relations at Ashoka University and Author of ‘War and Peace in Modern India’, addressed a whole range of issues in some detail. These include a discussion about the Indus Water Treaty being put in abeyance and what that amounts to, Pakistan’s response to put the Simla Agreement in abeyance as well as other bilateral agreements and what that amounts to, attempts to diplomatically isolate Pakistan and whether they can succeed, the whole issue of military action and whether, this time, we can fare better than what happened after Balakot when we lost planes and one of our pilots was captured, the strength and capacity of the Pakistan army vis-à-vis ours, is the Pakistani threat of using nuclear power credible or bluff and, finally, is there a danger of polarizing the country internally against Muslims and, perhaps, in particular, Kashmiris. Each of these issues is discussed in some detail and I will leave you to watch the interview to find out what Prof. Raghavan says. He is clear, precise, convincing and very easy to understand and follow. I would add that you will learn a lot from this interview.
