I’m Dumbfounded by CJI Chandrachud’s Shocking Statement, He Has Failed Oath He Took & Indian People

CJI Chandrachud "has failed the oath he's taken & he's failed the people of India"; I was "dumbfounded" by his "shocking statement"; I "couldn't believe my ears": former Judge of Delhi High Court, Justice Rekha Sharma .......................................... One of the most illustrious former Judges of the Delhi High Court has said Chief Justice Chandrachud “has failed the oath he’s taken and he’s failed the people of India also”. Justice Rekha Sharma was speaking about Chief Justice Chandrachud’s revelation that he appealed to God for a solution to the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhumi dispute and God gave it to him. Justice Sharma called this “a shocking statement”. She said: “I was dumbfounded. I couldn’t believe my ears and I felt I should hear it again and again to be sure that I had heard right”. In an approximately 27-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Justice Sharma said “if a Muslim judge had made a similar claim everyone would have been up in arms” adding he would have been “maligned”. Speaking about what this means for the Ayodhya judgement, which CJI Chandrachud claimed was revealed to him by God, Justice Rekha Sharma said it places “a question mark on the judgement”. At another point, she said it “undermines the judgement”. Justice Sharma said that “technically there is a conflict of interest” if it’s true that the deity, who through his “next friend”, was one of the petitioning parties, also revealed the solution to the Chief Justice. Justice Sharma said this has “surely brought down the halo around the Supreme Court”. She said “This judgement has crossed all levels”. Speaking about CJI Chandrachud himself, she said “he’s been a disappointment”, adding that the Office of the Chief Justice of India has also been “damaged”. Justice Sharma said “if judges turn to God why do we have Courts at all? … Why have Courts? Go to priests, they have better communication with God.” Speaking about the response from other judges she knows, Justice Sharma said “most of them are unhappy about this”. Justice Sharma said Chief Justice Chandrachud has committed a terrible mistake but he may not himself consider it a mistake. In the interview, Justice Sharma also talks about the occasion in September, during Ganpati puja, when Chief Justice Chandrachud ‘invited’ the Prime Minister to his residence for aarti, permitted it to be filmed and the video to be disseminated widely. She said it would look “suspicious” and it would raise question marks about his judgements. Justice Sharma said by claiming God had revealed the solution to him, Chief Justice Chndrachud has now accepted that he is the author of the Ayodhya judgement.
