How Swatantra Bharadwaj Became the New Icon of Caste Supremacists in India

A 22-year-old hindutva worker, Swatantra Bharadwaj - the “goon-activist” - had flaunted his attack on a minor Dalit girl’s father during a podcast recently. He was booked under the SC-ST and POCSO act after huge public outcry and protests. The incident reportedly took place on June 23 during the Youth Protest in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. But the Delhi Police sprung to action almost 72 days later, after the girl’s appeal on X was acknowledged by Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and other leaders. Within hours, Bhardwaj was detained from Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr. He is currently under 14-day judicial custody. However, the action against Bharadwaj has totally polarised social media. Swatantra is being equated with the victim for his “extreme politics.” It is being argued that both are being used by politicians. To a fence sitter, this framing might come across as balanced journalism. It is not. Bharadwaj, who had reportedly come to prepare for competitive exams in Delhi, soon made a career jump by appearing as a nameless Hindutva troll in BJP-Hindutva aligned vox-pop fake news factories. As his influence grew, he was seen on news channels like AajTak, Republic Bharat, News 18 India and other mainstream media channels. Soon, Bharadwaj graduated from threatening violence to committing violence on camera. In a video compilation of assaults, Swantantra posted on his social media, the video ends with the portrait of the Hindu god, Parshuram.
