Gen. Munir’s “Hostile to India, Will Fight Till Honourable Stalemate” but Won’t Press Nuclear Button
Gen. Munir is "definitely hostile to India & will fight till an honourable stalemate" but won't press nuclear button: Rana Banerji, former Special Secretary, R&AW and Author 'The Pakistan Army', to Karan Thapar for The Wire .......................................... Rana Banerji, who is arguably India’s best informed analyst of the Pakistan army and the author of ‘The Pakistan Army: Composition, Character and Compulsions’, says that Gen. Munir is “definitely hostile and hardline to India” and adds “he’ll fight on till an honourable stalemate”. However, Mr. Banerji adds that this hostility is “normal” for Pakistani Generals and, in response to a specific question, said he does not believe Gen. Munir would press the nuclear button. In a 45-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Rana Banerji, who is a former Special Secretary in R&AW, discussed in detail Gen. Munir’s career and character. Mr. Banerji spoke in detail about the military jobs Gen. Munir has held before becoming Director General ISI and Director General Military Intelligence. He spoke about his success in strengthening his position as Army Chief by reshuffling Corp Commanders and senior Generals and strategically appointing officers who have come from the Officer’s Training School rather than the Pakistan Military Academy. Gen. Munir is also from the OTS. Mr. Banerji also spoke about how Gen. Munir has strategically appointed conservative officers to several positions including that of DG ISPR. However, Mr. Banerji said he would not go so far as to call Gen. Munir a jihadi general, which is what sections of the Indian press have dubbed him. Mr. Banerji also spoke about Gen. Munir’s background, his father, the madrasa school he initially studied at and his family. Mr. Banerji spoke at length about Gen. Munir’s attitude to India and analyzed in detail the April 16 speech and its true implications and signaling. Mr. Banerji also spoke in detail about the present situation and how far Gen. Munir is likely to go. I am deliberately not telling you what Mr. Banerji said. I am restricting myself to the areas he spoke about. This is because you ought to hear Mr. Banerji yourself. There are very few people in India who know the Pakistani army and Gen. Munir himself better than Mr. Banerji.
