Meet Abhijeet Dipke, the man behind the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a movement branding itself as the voice of the “lazy and the unemployed”. Within a week of launching, the party had clocked 1 million sign-ups and a follower count that reportedly surpassed the BJP’s on Instagram. Shortly after, their website was taken down. In this in-depth interview with Manisha Pande, Dipke insists that followers of CJP belong to no existing party. “Even if I were to align myself with the AAP, these people wouldn’t follow me there.” Dipke is now being labeled a ‘national security threat’, and his parents have been moved to a secure location following targeted threats. “They are simply trying to intimidate me.” On why the anger is real, he says, “Turn on the TV, and all you see is people shouting… No matter the issue, they always reduce everything to a ‘Hindu vs Muslim’ narrative. How is my life supposed to improve by making a Muslim person’s life miserable?” He adds, “Their rhetoric remains exactly the same as it was back in 2014.
