Epstein Files & India: Emails, Excuses, and the one Question no one wants to ask | TV Newsance 332

#jeffrey_epstein #filthyrich #indianjournalism #hardeepsingh #hardeepsinghpuri #tvnewsance This week on TV Newsance, the J-word made a comeback on primetime. No, not jihad. Not jang. Jeffrey Epstein. After fresh documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein resurfaced, Indian television briefly remembered his name and then promptly forgot what journalism looks like. The emails show interactions between Epstein and Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri from 2014 to 2017 a period when Epstein had already pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting sex from a minor. Globally, the debate has been about judgement: why were powerful people networking with a man whose crimes were in the public domain? In India, the debate became: “Tab toh kuch pata hi nahi tha.” Puri’s defence? He was merely “pitching the India story” Digital India, Make in India, investment opportunities. Just a far-sighted private citizen doing nation branding, apparently. Anchors nodded along. Some even laughed. But here’s the thing: interacting with Epstein does not automatically imply criminality. It does, however, raise questions about judgement. And questions are what journalism is supposed to ask. Instead, we got primetime therapy sessions. On one channel, Puri joked about people being “jealous” that his name appeared in emails. On another, he described himself as a “far-sighted private citizen” who saw the Digital India revolution coming before it officially launched. Chronology, as always, was optional. On NDTV, anchor Padmaja Joshi walked viewers through select emails — including a visa request forwarded by Puri — and seemed more amused than alarmed. She even drew a neat distinction between Epstein’s “personal life” as a convicted sex offender and his “professional life” as a power broker. Helpful clarification. But perhaps the more urgent question was: why was a convicted sex offender still being treated as a legitimate bridge to global investors? To be clear, being mentioned in Epstein-related documents does not mean someone shares his crimes. The global conversation is not about guilt by association. It is about standards of judgement for those in power. Because when in doubt, time travel. This episode asks: ➜ If Epstein’s 2008 conviction was public knowledge, what exactly was “doubtful” about the case? ➜ Why are some emails highlighted and others glossed over? ➜ Why does Indian TV demand resignations over less, but treat this as banter? Amid all this Newsance, it’s Valentine’s week and Newslaundry has completed 14 years powered entirely by subscribers, not ads. If you believe journalism should question power instead of giggling with it, show independent media some love. Stay mad. 0:00-1:14 The 'J' word is back in news! 1:15-2:23 Who is Jeffrey Epstein? 2:24-3:02 The infamous Jeffrey Epstein Island 3:03-3:56 Who all were in touch with Epstein? 3:57-12:26 Hardeep Puri who was in touch with Epstein 12:27-15:40 Anil Ambani's involvement with Epstein 15:41-17:26 Rajdeep Sardesai on Epstein 17:27-20:47 Why is Indian media shying away to talk about Epstein and elite impunity? 20:48-21:19 Make independent media your Valentine 21:20-23:04 Build the future of news with us.
