DPDP Act Threatens Investigative Journalism: Media Bodies
On April 21, media organisations came together at New Delhi’s Press Club of India against the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP). This open meeting was jointly organised by the Indian Women's Press Corps, Editors Guild of India, Delhi Union of Journalists, DIGIPUB, and Press Club of India. RTI activists and experts also participated. The main concern journalists and RTI activists raised was a harsh penalty clause in the DPDP Act under Section 44(3), which allows a government-appointed board to fine individuals or organisations up to 500 crore rupees if they reveal someone’s so-called personal information without their consent. Right to Information experts and journalists present at the event expressed concern that this could have serious implications for journalism in the future, especially investigative reporting. They warned that the government was trying to silence journalists under the guise of the DPDP Act. The Right to Information Act of 2005 is an important law passed almost 20 years ago, but in the last few years, there have been continuous attempts to weaken the provisions of this Act. The last few weeks have seen intense opposition to the DPDP Act. In a letter to Union Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, MPs from the opposition India Alliance demanded the repeal of Section 44(3) of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act.
