In outspoken and hard-hitting criticism of the Chief Justice of India, one of the most highly regarded historians of modern India and a widely read political columnist has said the Chief Justice inviting the Prime Minister to his residence for Ganpati puja was “absolutely unforgiveable”. Ramachandra Guha said this has “undermined the integrity of the Supreme Court … and also diminished him and his office.” In a 25-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Ramachandra Guha was particularly critical of the fact the Chief Justice permitted cameramen and photographers to record the Prime Minister’s presence at the puja and disseminate it widely. He said: “allowing such flagrant display of his closeness to the PM was shocking”. Prof. Guha said the Chief Justice “lacked the wisdom and courage” to politely object to the filming and prevent it happening. Prof. Guha said: “At the very least the Chief Justice should have had the courage to tell the cameraman not to film”. Prof. Guha said this will be “forever a stain on his (CJI’s) personal reputation.” In the interview, Ramachandra Guha compared the Chandrachud incident with the letter Justice Bhagwati wrote in 1980 congratulating Indira Gandhi on her re-election and also with Chief Justice Balakrishnan’s attendance at an Iftar party hosted by Dr. Manmohan Singh in 2009.
