1982 was the year that the colour television first came to India. Delhi was hosting the Asian Games, a city marked by new stadiums and flyovers. But just 500 km away in Amritsar, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his armed followers were fortifying the Golden Temple. While Delhi was busy hosting the Asian Games, Punjab was hurtling towards a crisis. Within two years, Punjab witnessed Operation Blue Star; the Akal Takht was reduced to rubble. That was followed by a decade of terror where the ordinary people of Punjab were crushed between the brutal violence unleashed by the state and the Khalistani militants. Tavleen Singh reported it all up close. She met Bhindranwale inside the Golden Temple, spoke to Gen. Shabeg Singh before the assault, and witnessed the streets of Amritsar days after Operation Blue Star. On Back in Time, we revisit her reporting and the questions history still hasn’t answered.
