Arun Shourie on why the resurrection of Savarkar spells ruin for India

In his book The New Icon: Savarkar And The Facts, the author and former BJP minister dissects the nature of the “hatred” that saturated VD Savarkar and its origins. To Arun, the Hindutva icon was fascinated with violence even though he never participated in it. In this interview with Newslaundry’s Abhinandan Sekhri, Arun explains what pushed him into studying Savarkar in the first place. “There's a concern with what is happening today, which led me to Savarkar…Secondly, today, most apparent is the determination with which the current dispensation is trying to erase Gandhiji,” he says. And one device to erase Gandhi, he adds, is the resurrection of persons like Savarkar. Arun also says the Rashtriya Dal, an outfit set up by “Führer” Savarkar, instigated people to “violence against Gandhiji, Panditji, even Sardar Patel”. He also says Savarkar had “no hesitation in abandoning those who carried out [acts] under his name”. Despite all of this, Arun recognises Savarkar as a “model of rationalism” for his work against untouchability and his critique of caste. On the state of the economy today, the former cabinet minister for disinvestment identifies problems to be addressed, including the stagnation of investment in the private and public sector, overcomplicated governmental management, and the collapse of regulatory institutions. He’s even grimmer about the future of Indian polity, warning of “ever increasing difficulties and ruination” if India does not change course. Asserting that a “country like India cannot be managed by one superman”, he says a democracy should be managed by autonomous institutions whose work is guided by certain values. Watch.
