Op commenced on September 1, 1965, with intense shelling in the Chhamb-Jaurian sector targeting the Akhnoor bridge with the intention of later surrounding Jammu via the Sialkot route. #Indian Air Force and the bravery of the Army proved decisive. Following these orders, the Indian Army launched **'Operation Riddle'** with the primary objective of breaking through Pakistani defenses between Lahore and Sialkot and alleviating pressure on Akhnoor. #Starting on September 6th, India's 11 Corps began encircling Lahore from three different directions: the Amritsar-Lahore axis, the Khalra-Barkhi axis, and the Khem Karan-Kasur axis. #On the Amritsar-Lahore axis, the 3rd battalion of the Jat Regiment, led by Lieutenant Colonel Desmond Hayde, successfully crossed the Ichhogil canal near Lahore. Lieutenant Colonel Desmond Hayde was awarded the **Maha Vir Chakra** for his leadership and courage in the battle near Batapore. India also secured victories in the Barkhi and Khem Karan sectors.
