Their demand for independence is presented alongside the severe human rights issues they face. • Historically, the British Raj exploited internal conflicts among #Baloch tribes, establishing the 'Balochistan Agency' and treating states like Kalat, Kharan, Las Bela, and Makran with varying degrees of autonomy. Kalat held a relatively higher status, maintaining diplomatic ties and a distinct identity during the British era, confirmed by unique treatment at events like the 1877 Delhi Durbar. • Leading up to the 1947 partition, Muhammad Ali Jinnah initially advocated for #Kalat's independence. However, internal conflicts among Baloch states and external pressure led to the accession of Las Bela, Kharan, and Makran to Pakistan by March 21, 1948. Kalat's Khan was subsequently forced to sign accession papers on March 28, 1948, despite Jinnah's earlier stance, a move still seen negatively by Baloch people. • The current Baloch struggle is rooted in significant disparity: #Baluchistan holds a large part of Pakistan's land and resources (gas, gold, uranium, strategic ports like Gwadar) but suffers from extreme poverty, low literacy, and high mortality rates. This economic and resource disparity fuels the conflict and resentment. • The conflict involves armed resistance by groups like the BLA, facing brutal suppression including the killing of leaders like Akbar Bugti. Separatist activities are increasing, with Pakistan accusing Afghanistan and Iran of providing support.
